Hydration & Electrolytes: Simple Foundations for Performance & Recovery

Hydration Performance Sports Nutrition

Maintaining adequate hydration and electrolyte balance is one of the simplest, highest-leverage ways to support physical performance and recovery. Even mild dehydration (as little as 2% body weight loss) can impair concentration, increase perceived effort, reduce endurance and slow normal recovery processes.

The Importance of Water

Water is essential for nearly every physiological function: temperature regulation, nutrient transport, waste removal, joint lubrication and cellular health. During physical activity or hot weather, sweat losses increase the need for fluid replacement.

Electrolytes and their Role

Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium) help regulate fluid balance inside and outside cells, support nerve signalling and muscle contraction, and maintain acid-base balance. Sodium is the primary electrolyte lost in sweat, and inadequate replacement can lead to imbalances, especially during prolonged or repeated activity.

Practical Hydration Strategies

Ways to maintain optimal hydration include:

  • Drinking water consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until thirst appears
  • Including electrolyte-containing foods (bananas, spinach, dairy, salted nuts, coconut water)
  • Adjusting intake based on activity duration/intensity, climate and individual sweat rate
  • Monitoring urine colour: pale yellow is a simple indicator of good hydration
  • Rehydrating after activity, replacing approximately 1.5 times the fluid lost (weigh before/after to estimate)

Individual Factors

Individual factors that influence hydration needs include body size, fitness level, acclimatisation to heat, and genetics (some people are “salty sweaters”). Listening to the body and adjusting habits accordingly is more effective than rigid rules.

Hydration is not glamorous, but it is foundational. Consistent attention to fluid and electrolyte balance supports energy levels, mental clarity and physical resilience day after day.
